This research field is dedicated to the study of pelagic and coastal ecosystems, focusing on the design and realization of innovative instruments and multi-sensor platforms for the measurement of biological, optical, physical and chemical variables of seawater, and the study of marine ecosystems at different temporal and spatial scales.

This area of research is focused on two major subjects: the study of pelagic ecosystems, carried out through the acquisition and processing of data collected in the field during oceanographic and measurement campaigns and through the appilcation of mathematical models that simulate ecosystem dynamics (interactions between physical and biological processes in micro, meso and macro scale), with particular reference to primary production. The second subject focuses on the study and monitoring of benthic communities, with particular reference to Posidonia oceanica meadows.

This area of research is focused on three major subjects: coastal dynamic, focused on the study of hydrodynamic processes through the use and development of two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical models; sedimentology, which includes studies on the evolution of seashores, coastal erosion and geochronological approach to problems related to coastal sediment transport; geochemistry, including the characterization of the continental contributions in relation to anthropogenic sources and sources of pollution coming from the coast.
